Calgary: The Muslim Council of Calgary and it affiliate organizations are saddened to hear about the loss and destruction caused by the wild fires in Alberta. Our hearts, thoughts and prayers are with people of Fort McMurray and the surrounding areas.
The damage and destruction has been so extensive that the government of Alberta has declared a state of emergency. The fire has destroyed more than 1,600 structures and 80,000 people have already been evacuated. We are now learning that evacuation orders have been issued for many neighboring areas. Muslim Council of Calgary pledges to work with governmental and non-governmental organizations planning to support evacuees who decide to move to Calgary.
Muslim Council of Calgary will also be reaching out to Muslim Community in Calgary to raise funds to support those who have been displaced from their homes and who have been temporarily housed in Edmonton or surrounding areas. MCC will be raising funds for the effected people and send it to Canadian Red cross. The reason we have selected Canadian Red Cross is because both Federal and Provincial Government are matching donations generated by Red Cross.
