MCC Condemns President Trump's Decision

7 December 2017

U.S President Donald Trump has declared Jerusalem as the capital of Israel on Wednesday and directed the State Department to begin the process to move the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

Muslims all over the world including the members of the Muslim Council of Calgary and the Muslim community in Calgary at large, are completely outraged at this decision. Muslims are inflamed on this move as it is a huge disappointment with repercussions on the stability and security of the region as Jerusalem is home to the holy Muslim shrines, the al-Aqsa Mosque and the Dome of the Rock. It sets the wrong precedence of occupation by force and legalization of occupation by coercion and use force against weak and oppressed.

Further on, such a move would overturn 70 years of international consensus, and will put an end to all efforts to achieve peace between Israelis and Palestinians. An embassy move to Jerusalem would be a violation of international law, and a huge setback to peace hopes. For Palestinians, it is not merely a symbolic demand; it is a requirement which is at the heart of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

The Government of Canada has stated that it will not move the Canadian embassy in Tel Aviv, Israel to Jerusalem and still considers Tel Aviv as the capital of Israel. We urge Government of Canada and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to continue to use their influence to get United States to reconsider its position.
